- W2528798612 abstract "Increasing integration of renewables-based distributed generation (DG) sources into power grids raises issues such as voltage instability and increased power losses. Such issues, however, can be effectively mitigated using reactive power availability of the DGs. This paper, therefore, proposes a two-layered hierarchical control strategy to make the grid minimize its power losses, while keeping voltages within limits. Further, this paper also considers the cost of reactive power injection by the DG converters, and tries to find a tradeoff between low reactive power injections and low power losses. The optimal reactive power compensation, utilizing DGs at the first and second layer, is performed with the help of modified gradient search algorithm incorporating theory of mutually coupled oscillators, and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, respectively. Simulation studies on a modified IEEE 30-bus test system highlight the effectiveness of the aforementioned tradeoff, and show that the proposed algorithm performs effectively under dynamic conditions." @default.
