• W2528913373 abstract "Present study consists the effect of Tsunami on the phytoplankton variability in the Bay of Bengal, Seas around Andaman and Malacca Strait was studied using IRS P4Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) data. Distribution was compared with previous year. Changing circulation in the Bay of Bengal has a strong influence on the spatial and temporal variability of the biological production, expressed in terms of chlorophyll-a concentration, an index of phytoplankton biomass. Satellite measurement of ocean colour, which gives large spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, provides unique opportunity for the study. OCM data for December 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and January 2000 & 2005 were analyzed which indicated increase in chlorophyll concentration throughout, especially Malacca Strait region (near Sumatra) to as high as 20-25 times compared to pre Tsunami period. At other places too the concentration was at least raised three to five times compared to pre Tsunami period. Climatological analysis was done with previous normal years’ data, and showed that the increasing trend in the chlorophyll-a concentration was significant in the post tsunami period till first week of January 2005. Also it was observed that the across longitude variation was more remarkable than the latitudinal variation. Rapid increase in chlorophyll-a concentration in shelf and slope regions of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea in the post tsunami period may be attributed to the breakdown of density stratification and upwelling of nutrients due to tsunami-induced internal waves." @default.
