- W25306507 abstract "This chapter describes energy utilization and oxidative recovery metabolism in skeletal muscle. The need for more strictly quantitative data both on the oxygen uptake and on the mechanical output led to the use of naturally and artificially perfused muscles in situ with measurements of the arteriovenous differences of oxygen and CO2. In free-loaded contractions, small loads stretch the resting muscle quite considerably, and as a result, the amount of shortening achieved actually increases rapidly when the load is increased over to attain the body length. The three processes of distribution of energy utilization are distinguishable, namely, shortening, activation, and the performance of work. When a muscle is stretched in an attempt to contract, the work term of force times distance is negative. Intense bands disappear upon treatment with oxidizing agents but reappear after the addition of a reducing compound. An increase in number of stimuli per unit time instead of being inefficient improves the economy by improving the degree of locking. The relation between after-load and recovery metabolism after twitches and short tetani could be analyzed in terms of the time integral of tension plus the time integral of shortening plus the total work, after the functions are properly scaled" @default.
