- W2530751488 abstract "This chapter focuses on Westridge School. It draws attention to the ways in which teachers become the bearers of masculinity by incorporating taken-for-granted assumptions of boys’ behaviour into their understandings of gender. The ways in which race and class forge particular conceptions of male hegemony is discussed. Reflecting broader social patterns of male power, the teachers endorse hegemonic masculinity embodying physical domination, sport, strength, courage, competitiveness, intellectualness and aggression. Whilst these exalted forms of male hegemony are inhabited and supported by boys and men, women are often complicit in supporting these practices. The chapter provides examples of how boys and girls negotiate masculinity and accommodate versions of competitiveness and academic prowess as keys to masculine strength and power. It is argued in this chapter that investments in hegemonic masculinity are restrictive and work against gender equality in the early years of primary schooling." @default.
