- W2530828928 abstract "Friction stir welding (FSW) is an established process for the joining of plastics, polymer materials, and alloys. Many applications of this process have been explored using a milling setup. However, few works have reported on friction stir–welded joints with dissimilar plastic (DP) materials after reinforcement with metal powder. In this work, we report on an experimental study of FSW using low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These DP-based materials were welded by improving the melt flow index (MFI) of the polymers and with reinforcement with Fe metal powder. The present study of FSW for LDPE and HDPE was performed using a vertical milling machine and three input parameters, namely, specimen thickness, tool feed rate, and tool rotational speed. The effects of FSW process parameters on the properties such as Shore D hardness, tensile strength, and porosity of weld joint were investigated and optimization of welding parameters was performed using Minitab software.
