- W2531124021 abstract "The Pennington Formation in eastern Kentucky occupies the interval between the Val- meyeran and Chesterian Newman Limestone and the Lower Pennsylvanian Breathitt or Lee For- mations. Although the Pennington traditionally has been considered latest Mississippian in age, scar- city of megafossils, poorly known stratigraphy, and the complex stratigraphic-tectonic relationships at the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary in the area have prevented age verification. Knowledge of age and stratigraphic relationships within the Pennington is a key to determining the validity of the Lee-Newman Barrier-Shoreline Model (Horne et al., 1971, 1974) which contends that Newman carbonates, Pennington shales, and Pennsylvanian sands and shales are facies in a contemporaneous environmental continuum. A comparative palynological study of shales and thin coals in the Pennington, Breathitt and Lee Formations from selected sites in northeastern Kentucky verifies the Chesterian age of the Pennington. Approximately 140 species of miospores were recorded from spore assemblages that range in age from middle Chesterian (late Visean) to early Pennsylvanian (Westphalian A). Delineation of late Visean and Namurian A spore assemblages within the Chesterian rocks of the Pennington Formation enables approximate correlation with the Chesterian type section and approximation of the systemic boundary. Because most Pennington sections in the study area are incomplete due to post-depositional erosion, and because Pennsylvanian shales and coals of the Breathitt Formation are locally similar in ap- pearance to Mississippian shales and coals of the subjacent Pennington Formation, palynology pres- ently provides the best means of correlation and approximating the systemic boundary. Palynology also indicates that the economically important Olive Hill clay bed of Crider (1913), formerly considered Early Pennsylvanian in age, is probably Late Mississippian in age." @default.
