- W2531399706 abstract "Hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay is used for strengthening the existing pavement structure, correcting the surface defects, and improving pavement serviceability. It may be applied to the pavement structure more than once during the entire service life. Therefore, the structural behavior of overlaid asphalt pavement is of concern since it determines the thickness of HMA overlay. Moreover, it also determines the optimal timing for next HMA overlay as well as the results of cost-benefit analyses for pavement design. In this chapter, the structural behavior equation for overlaid asphalt pavement was developed based on the structural behavior equation of newly constructed pavement. An effective thickness coefficient was presented to consider the contribution of existing asphalt layers to the overlaid pavement. The factors influencing the effective thickness coefficient were investigated, ie, load repetitions, initial pavement condition index, thickness for existing surface course, type of base course, and initial deflection. A Visual Basic-based program was developed to integrate the structural behavior equation for overlaid pavement into life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA). A case study of how to use the proposed equation to performing LCCA is also provided." @default.
