- W2531438280 abstract "The intake of dry matter, organic matter, digestible organic matter and digestible energy was determined for 24 lactating dairy cows fed fresh herbage indoors. There were four feeding periods each lasting 12 days, and grass was cut fresh each day with a single-chop forage harvester to a residual sward mass of approximately 1200 kg of organic matter/ha. Grass was fed five times daily and times of access to herbage were about 20 hours daily. Herbage digestibility was measured by total faecal collection on four of the cows in each period. The four feeding periods occurred in,late spring, early summer, late summer and autumn with grass cut initially in mid- to late-April and subsequently at 6-week intervals. Herbage organic matter digestibility was highest for the primary cuts (>82%), approximately 80% for the early-summer and autumn cuts and 75% for the late summer cuts. Daily herbage intakes for the cows were high in all periods and averaged 16.8 kg dry matter/cow. Advancing lactation had a significant effect on daily intake of nutrients. Daily intake of organic matter and digestible organic matter fell by 0.63 and 0.82 respectively from late spring to autumn. Liveweight and daily milk yield significantly affected daily herbage intake. For each 100 kg increase in liveweight daily herbage dry matter intake increased by 2.2 kg. The partial regression coefficient for a daily fat corrected (3.6%) milk increase of 1 kg was 0.46 kg of dry matter intake. The best regression model from the data explained over 90% of the variation in dry matter intake between cows with an RSD of 0.53. The intakes predicted were substantially higher than those which would be predicted from the ARC metabolizable energy system. Regression models using liveweight raised to different powers other than 1.0 explained less variation and were associated with more error. Physical measures of surface area were less useful than simple measures of liveweight in explaining the effect of body size on intake." @default.
