- W2531750420 abstract "Removal of particles from the combustion gas of a pressurized fluidized-bed combustor protects the gas turbine from erosion and eliminates the need for a downstream baghouse or precipitator. This report describes the performance of a 7 MWe hot gas filter during the British Coal Topping Cycle Experiment in 1991 and 1992. Early experience with the filter revealed that the ash was very difficult to clean from the filter elements. This difficulty resulted in excessive pressure drop and failure of the hold-down system. Through further refinements of the hold-down system and a change of sorbent from a limestone to a dolomite, the filter was able to operate in a stable manner. The system achieved over 1500 hours of filter operation. During successful runs, dust loading at the filter outlet was typically 0.3 ppMw. On-line measurements of permeance showed a gradual decrease to steady values between 0.2 and 0.3 m/sec-bar after 800 hours of operation. The ceramic filter elements failed when either the hold-down system failed or when the back pulse system failed, resulting in ash bridging between candles. Significant bending of the elements occurred in service, again attributed to ash bridging.
