• W2533057789 abstract "Diagnostic testing for Alzheimer’s disease does not always offer patients the certainty or reassurance they were seeking for, especially when results of different tests are equivocal or conflicting, and particularly when patients are diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment. This study aims to assess patients’ and caregivers’ views on and experiences with 1) the decision about diagnostic testing for Alzheimer’s disease, and 2) receiving test results. Separate focus groups will be conducted with 1) patients who recently underwent diagnostic testing in a Dutch memory clinic (currently N=5) and 2) their caregivers (currently N=6). Audio-recordings of the focus group will be transcribed verbatim and analysed using MaxQDA. Data collection is still ongoing. Both patients and caregivers felt they had the biggest say in deciding about whether or not to initiate diagnostic testing. However, it was unclear to them why different diagnostic tests are initiated; a decision which they felt was made by the clinician. Patients felt that during the clinical encounters the clinician mainly shared information with the caregivers, and not with them. Patients and caregivers had a strong need to discuss both the diagnosis and the results of individual tests, including the extent to which results are deviant. Also, they desired more information on the emotional impact and the consequences of a diagnosis. Results so far suggest that patients who underwent diagnostic testing for Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers feel involved in deciding about whether or not to initiate testing. Yet, they do not feel involved in deciding about which specific tests should be initiated. Patients and caregivers indicate they prefer more information on specific tests and test results, as well as on the implications of diagnosis and test results for daily life. In a follow-up study, we will observe clinician-patient consultations in daily clinical practice and analyse the communication on the decision for diagnostic testing as well as on the test results, to assess the extent to which the steps of shared decision making are followed." @default.
