The results of the parallelmeasurements of selected testing devices for determining thequality of soil compaction were used for comparative analysis.The correlations between values obtained from variousapparatuses were derived to evaluate the usability of thedevices for tested type of soil. Test field represented softsubsoil of the road embankment consisted from low plasticityclay. Correlations show that examined apparatuses are suitablefor examination of compaction level of fine-grained soils withconsideration of limit conditions of used equipment. Appliedmethods are quick and results can be obtained immediately aftermeasurement, and the methods are thus suitable in cases whenconstruction works have to be performed in a short period oftime. Generally, both Humboldt GeoGauge™ and Clegg Impact SoilTester can substitute the LDD test in terms of the earthworksassessment, however, limit conditions of apparatuses given bythe manufacturers need to be taken into account to achieveresults with a required accuracy. Mentioned methods are basedon the dynamic effect of the testing equipment on the soillayer, so results have to be interpreted carefully consideringthe type and physical state of tested soil. © 2016 The Authors.Published by Elsevier Ltd.
