- W253670341 abstract "In the spring of 1985, I spent Monday and Wednesday mornings teaching and conducting research with Cynthia Brabson. Cynthia taught a self-contained class of 15 children, ages 8-11, who were labeled learning disabled. I was a doctoral student interested in collaborative research, literacy, and children who experienced learning difficulties in school contexts. We had decided to work together to integrate reading and writing into Cynthia's curriculum and to research together the process of our collaboration. I began this research/teaching experience with a theory of learning and a set of assumptions about children labeled learning disabled. In the earliest stages of research, those belief systems influenced both the design of the study (as field based collaborative research) and the problem I had defined (What were the characteristics of the learners in the context that Cynthia and I would be creating?). I knew that during the collaborative experience my belief systems would continue to affect the decisions I made as researcher/teacher and as reporter of the research. Thus, I felt that these beliefs were integral parts of the construction of knowledge that would be occurring.
