- W2536893402 abstract "Compared with most other species discussed in this book, farm animals offer several advantages when their behaviour is to be video recorded. They are physically large, which means that expensive macro-equipment is not required; they can be easily located; and there are often many individuals in one location, allowing rapid collection of large amounts of data. These benefits, in addition to recent technological advances and decreases in the prices of equipment, might lead one to expect increasing usage of video recording in farm animal ethology. However, a survey of the most compre hensive scientific journal of farm animal behaviour, Applied Animal Behav iour Science, has revealed this to be erroneous. The number of studies using video to record the behaviour of farm animals has increased considerably (Fig. 7.1a), but when this is expressed as a proportion of total studies on farm animals (Fig. 7.1b) it appears to be constant. This might indicate that current video technology has little new to offer farm animal ethology, or that workers in this discipline are remaining ignorant of the possible techniques and advantages of video recording. Farm animal ethologists who regularly use video-cassette recording (VCR) develop techniques to suit their own purposes. These techniques are generally simple, but their development by an individual researcher can be time-consuming, frustrating and fraught with losses of data. This chapter is most likely to benefit persons at greatest risk of making such mistakes, i.e. researchers using VCR for the first time, or on a species unfamiliar to them. Subjects are presented in the order they are likely to be contemplated when planning and executing a study. These include techniques of marking, camera use and recording, playback and data extraction, and general Video Techniques in Animal Ecology and Behaviour. Edited by Stephen D. Wratten.
