- W2538221552 abstract "Studies show that activity of β-galactosidase remains high among most adults of the white population long after their age of weaning. Thus, for them, consumption of milk, a product with a high calcium content and good protein quality, is possible without the occurrence of any adverse gastrointestinal symptoms. Calcium and protein can contribute to the maintenance of bone and muscle mass, respectively, the latter being the most important mechanical force for bone health. In the white female population, osteoporotic fracture risk reduction was observed to be the highest when calcium intake is above 700 mg day-1. Intake should be close to the recommended daily allowance of 1000–1200 mg. However, there is an increased risk of cardiovascular events when the mean daily calcium intake is close to the tolerable upper limit of 2500 mg day-1. Some dairy products, particularly some processed cheese products, have a high sodium chloride content. Sodium chloride has calciuretic effects and, particularly in postmenopausal women, may adversely affect calcium metabolism. Accordingly, not all dairy products are equally good vehicles of calcium and they may, hence, differ in their effect on bone health. There is evidence from controlled trials that school milk intervention and milk supplements, respectively, can increase bone mineral density in the white population and in Chinese girls and young Japanese women, and in postmenopausal Chinese women." @default.
