- W2538604089 abstract "Drought stress is alarmingly on the rise over the past decades. Application of plant growth regulator such as salicylic acid (SA) is one approach to mitigate the damages of water scarcity and to improve plant efficiency. A pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse condition to study the effect of SA and drought stress on biochemical traits and essential oil (EO) of Lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora L.) as an aromatic medicinal plant. Four irrigation levels (control (100% Field capacity: FC), 25%, 50% and 75% FC) and three SA concentrations (0, 150, and 300 mg/L−1) were used along with their interactions. The results revealed significant (P<0.05) effects of the applied drought stress and SA treatments on the biochemical traits and EO. Drought stress significantly increased the amount of sugar, proline and the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and, peroxidase (POD). EO content and yield also increased significantly. SA at 300 mg/L−1 showed the major impact on growth rate, improving physiological parameters and EO yield, decreasing the adverse effects of drought stress and increased the plant acclimation and performance under water deficit condition." @default.
