- W2540136619 abstract "The most common low molecular weight aminothiols are glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys), and homocysteine (Hcy). They each play major roles in biology and biomedicine in both enzymatic and nonenzymatic processes. In the latter regard, the distinctive redox and nucleophilic properties imparted by their sulfhydryl groups enable them to modulate a variety of physiological states. The traditional probes and abiotic sensors for the biothiols are mainly dye molecules functionalized with universal electrophile moieties to enable conjugation to all thiol-containing compounds. More recently, the field has focused on optical reagents that can selectivity differentiate GSH, Cys, and Hcy from each other, in addition to many other components in natural media, since each of the biothiol analytes is involved in distinct biological processes. Herein, examples are presented of how the covalent reactivity of electrophilic dyes toward biothiols can be modulated via supramolecular chemistry to attain highly selective probes and sensors for each of the biothiols. In addition, significant opportunities and needs in the field of biothiol sensing are presented, highlighting relatively under-investigated biomedical issues." @default.
