- W2541401219 abstract "Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are obligate land-plant fungal symbionts, as well as extremely ubiquitous, and currently found in nearly all terrestrial ecosystems. In the AM symbiosis, the fungal hyphae provide help for the transfer of nutrients from the soil to the plant roots, in exchange for photosynthetically-derived carbon sources from the plant. This subsequently increases individual plant growth and tolerance to stress. The presence of AM fungi in terrestrial ecosystems has also been attributed to increased plant biodiversity and overall ecosystem productivity. Besides the presence of genome plasticity, genome analyses have also recently uncovered biological aspects of AM fungi that were previously unknown to exist, including their potential capability to undergo sexual reproduction, and the presence of genes that are generally linked to plant pathogens. This chapter summarizes recent findings in research areas, and highlights how these have advanced our knowledge of AM fungal evolution and genomics." @default.
