- W254253485 abstract "Paleosols in cratonic basins directly influenced sea level changes are important stratigraphic markers and can be viewed as terrestrial condensed sections. Simple models are needed to maximize the role of paleosols in reconstructing basin history. Models dealing with the gross expression, stratigraphic occurrence, and correlation of paleosols are: (1) A single, deeply- or well-developed, laterally continuous paleosol records a long episode of low sea level; extensive development of plinthic, argillic, or petrocalcic horizons, or duripans/silcretes is apparent. (2) Multiple, weakly- to moderately-developed paleosols record hidden marine regressions in a continental section. (3) Slow sea level rise/slow transgression leads to a cross-gradient differential in the degree of pedogenesis evident at a single stratigraphic horizon. (4) Rapid sea level rise/rapid transgression results in a relatively constant degree of pedogenesis evident at a particular stratigraphic horizon across a large area of a basin. (5) A single, deeply- or well-developed paleosol at a basin margin (model 1) correlates with multiple, less well-developed paleosols towards the axis of the same basin or in an adjacent, more rapidly subsiding basin (model 2). Models dealing with effects at the scale of an individual pedon are: (6) Enhanced organic upbuilding of a coastal plain soil with rising seamore » level produces a strong break in soil character. (7) Gradual overpowering of pedogenesis in a mineral soil by sedimentation during marine transgression. (8) Particularly rapid transgression and/or burial leads to an abrupt cessation of pedogenesis with no accumulation of an organic soil and little or no evidence of an upper solum mixing zone.« less" @default.
