- W2544565925 abstract "Among the different groups of nickel alloys may be found materials to resist corrosion in virtually any aqueous environment. This paper describes some of the most important characteristics of the nickel alloys that are widely used to resist aqueous corrosion. Nickel is highly resistant to many corrosive media and is readily alloyed with other metals such as copper, chromium, iron and molybdenum for enhanced resistance to particular environments. Unalloyed nickel finds major commercial usage in the caustic-chlorine industry where resistance to both general and localised corrosion (stress-corrosion cracking) is required. The addition of copper to nickel provides alloys that retain many of the beneficial corrosion characteristics of pure nickel while having resistance to sulphuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and chloride salt solutions. Nickel-chromium-iron alloys take advantage of the alloying effects chromium to resist oxidising conditions in both aqueous solutions and high-temperature atmospheres. These alloys are also used in liquid-media heat exchangers for resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, an advantage provide by their nickel contents. The nickel-chromium-iron-molybden alloys are used for broad-spectrum resistance to reducing acids, oxidising acids, caustic alkalies, and salts. The molybdenum-containing alloys also have increased resistance to pitting." @default.
