The study used a content analysis to provide a systematic assessment of the depiction and frequency of aggression displayed by television characters. The study was guided by the research of Ostrov, Gentil, and Crick (2006), who found a statistically significant correlation between preschool children's television viewing and aggressive behavior, yet identified a need for a content analysis of these programs. Based on the theoretical frameworks of the social learning perspective, ecological systems, sociocultural theory, and cognitive development, this study explored the frequency and depiction of aggression in television programs designed for preschool age children. The study examined three major television networks: PBS, Nickelodeon, and The Disney Channel. The researcher collected 90 hours of data, recording equal numbers of data for educational and informal programs. The data was coded and recorded using a chart designed for this study that included the following variables: title and time of program, physical characteristics of each character, type of aggression portrayed, stereotypic traits, and the consequences that are depicted for each aggressive action. The data for this study was then analyzed through statistical tests. The findings suggest that aggression is more common in informal programs than in educational program and that the depiction of the character played a significant role in the frequency of aggression and the consequences received for the aggressive action. The gender of the character was not found to have a significant difference in the type of the aggression, which negated past research findings. Limitations to the study included limited selection criteria for the sampling units, the method of data coding, and a lack of research from the children's perspective. Future areas of research suggested the inclusion of different programs from more television channels and examining the topic with children." @default.
