- W254522217 abstract "* Media Firms: Structures, Operations, and Performance. Robert G. Picard, ed. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum, 2002. iv, 267 pp. $55 hbk. This book is a collection of studies and essays by a distinguished group of international management and economics scholars. As such, it provides the reader with an eclectic range of information on topics such as an analysis of the top six communication industry firms, joint value creation in the Norweigan film sector, digital television broadcasting in Australian firms, an assessment of the broadband strategies of the Western European Telecoms, a comparison of new and old in economic and financial news markets, and many other areas of interest within the broad field. Earlier versions of this material were first presented at the Fifth World Media Economics Conference, held in Turku, Finland, in May 2002, attended by scholars from the global community of economics study. The papers included in this volume are those which dealt with issues of firms. As the editor states in the first chapter of this volume, media firms are central to questions involving economics, yet limited research in the field has actually focused on the company level. The field of economics is relatively new; in the first three decades of study, most of the work has involved exploration of structures, industry organization, and addressed broad questions about infrastructure, the economic impact of changes within traditional and their markets, and the introduction and growth of new media, new consumers, policy, and evolving market conditions. This kind of scholarly examination serves as an overview of the field and as such has provided a solid base. As the field matures, however, it is more and more important to examine individual companies and their decision-making processes. Only by doing this can an understanding of the depth of the field, the shared but sometimes unique circumstances of varying interests and subsets of companies, and the values that lead to very different problem-solving approaches be realized. An examination of individual cases and circumstances reveals a complexity in solving what might have been misunderstood as a commonality of problems. It is just these kinds of nuances that provide ample justification for a book that might, at first examination, appear to be a collection of disparate works by authors writing about industry issues. By addressing the problems of several types of firms with varying missions, ownership patterns, geographic locations, values, economic circumstances, and national pressures, the book serves to introduce the myriad of problems that exists within the and to the complexity of making decisions within the parameters of differing constraints. …" @default.
