- W2547687112 abstract "The results of over ten years of systematic monthly surveys of the birds of Wilson's Promontory are published, and it is shown that 272 species of birds have now been recorded from the Promontory. This means that over one hundred species of birds have been added to the previous lists, and many of these observations are new records for eastern Victoria. A very large percentage of the total number of species of birds listed for the eastern half of this State has been found on the Promontory; a few exceptions being those that are northern forms with Victoria the southern extremity of their range. The problems involved and the methods adopted in carrying out the survey are stated. The distance that the area is from Melbourne is exemplified by the truly enormous mileage that has been incurred by the members of the survey team, while the size of, and the difficulty of travelling on, the Promontory necessitated over 1,000 man-days of effort. The effect of fire and how it has changed the vegetation, with a consequent alteration in the bird communities, is discussed . Also the effort to introduce native birds to the area and the results of these actions. Some remarkable affinities with Tasmanian birds are revealed, especially the endemic Clinking and the Black Currawongs of Tasmania with the Grey and the Pied Currawongs of the mainland, also the occurrence of the Tasmanian Raven on Wilson 's Promontory . Other sections discuss the migration of birds through the area to and from Tasmania, also those migrants that do not go beyond the Promontory. A Tabular List of Birds, covering the status of each species and the degree of its occurrence over 15 different types of habitats is shown, while the last section is a detailed report of the observations recorded, both before and during the survey, over each species of bird . The importance of Wilson 's Promontory as a National Park is substan tiated. The conservation of the area and the preservation of our national heritage is of paramount significance." @default.
