- W2548073077 abstract "Greece and the New Balkans Greece’s position in regards to the Balkans is not simple. Between 1945 and 1990, everything separated Greece from the Balkans. In 1954 Greece joined NATO and the United States established 25 military bases on its territory. Greece belonged to the Western bloc, whereas the Balkans were situated on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Greece further de-balkanized in 1981 when joining the EEC, later called UE. The political fall of Eastern Europe between 1989 and 1991 and the explosion of Yugoslavia impelled Greece to consider its Balkanic neighbours. It is less Greece turning towards the Balkans than the Balkans discovering then Greece, as the nearby demonstration of wealth of the Western world. For the first time Bulgarians, Yugoslavians, Albanians, Romanians can measure their backwardness. 1989 witnesses an awakening in all areas: migrating flows, economic competition, trade between neighbours, ethnic tensions and national political fights. Due to its geographical position, Greece has to adapt to the new state of affairs but barely realized it. The Greece’s Balkan politics, in its evolution and jolts, is nothing more than the story of this adaptation." @default.
