- W2549209401 abstract "Summary. The paper analyses the crucial role that reading strategies play in the cognitive activity of reading comprehension alongside with skills, attentional and knowledge resources. The author empha-sizes the necessity of teacher’s guidance in the students’ choice of efficient reading strategies and presents the explicit reading instructions types in accordance with the stages of working on the text. Key words: reading strategies; foreign language reading for specific purposes; explicit instructions. The problems of reading comprehension nowadays tend to be approached from the cognitive view. Cognitive Reading Theory emphasizes the interactive nature of read-ing and the constructive nature of comprehension. It highlights that a reader needs to use a set of flexible, adaptable strategies to make sense of a text and to monitor ongoing understanding. Reading strategies can be defined as abilities that are potentially open to conscious reflexion, and based on a reader’s intention to address a problem or a specific goal while reading [1]. The research in the field of reading strategies has dealt with identification pro-cedures of reading strategies (A. U. Chamot, A. D. Cohen, J. M. O'Malley, Rubin, Wenden), terminology and classification of strategies (A. U. Chamot, J. M. O'Malley, R. L. Oxford), the effects of learner characteristics on strategy use (N. J. Anderson, J. Bruen, J.M. Green, R.L. Oxford, G. Wharton), and the effects of culture and context on strategy use (A.U. Chamot, C. Keatley, G. Wharton). Recent studies have also sug-gested important issues related to instruction such as: explicit and integrated strategy instruction, language of instruction and models for language learning strategy instruc-tion. Most researchers agree on the importance of explicitness in strategy instruction (N. J. Anderson, A. U. Chamot, A.D. Cohen, B. L. Leaver, D. Nunan, J. M. O’Malley, R. L. Oxford, H.-J. Shen). The analysis of the recent findings on concerning reading strategies allows mak-ing conclusion that teacher’s ability to provide students with clear and reasonable strat-egy instructions is crucial for successful reading comprehension. Reading is a strategic process, fluent reading comprehension requires the capacity for recognising reading difficulties, address imbalances between text information and reader knowledge, and make decisions for monitoring comprehension and shifting goals for reading. It means that teacher should be skillful in his/her instructions and address students’ needs in instructive response during their reading process. Effective readers use strategies to understand what they read before, during, and after reading. Before reading, they use prior knowledge to think about the topic; make predictions about the probable meaning of the text; preview the text by skimming and scanning to get a sense of the overall meaning. During reading, they monitor understanding by questioning, thinking about, and reflecting on the ideas and information in the text. After reading, they reflect upon the ideas and information in the text; relate what they have read to their own experiences and knowledge; clarify their understand-ing; extend their understanding in critical and creative ways. The teacher’s task is to enable students to become strategic and effective readers through a variety of instructional approaches. Explicit teaching, thinking aloud, model-ling, discussion, and small-group support are only a few of the approaches teachers use to help students become more strategic and effective readers in different contexts. The journalism students mostly deal with informational texts in the process of learning English for specific purposes as well as in their further professional activity. The reading strategies tips represented in Table 1 were developed to integrate teacher’s instructions into the foreign language learning and help students to acquire cognitive strategies while reading informational texts on all the stages." @default.
