- W254976029 abstract "This chapter discusses the neuronal control of neurochemical processes in the basal ganglia. In the basal ganglia, primary interest is on the presence of dopamine. In mammals, the high concentration of dopamine in the basal ganglia is quite striking as compared to other areas of brain and there is now abundant evidence that the presence of this monoamine in the basal ganglia is a function of the existence of a direct projection of dopamine producing axons to the neostriatum from cell bodies in the substantia nigra. By application of the Fink and Heimer modification of the Nauta method for silver impregnation of degenerating axons and terminals, it has recently been possible to study the course and distribution of axon degeneration following lesions of the substantia nigra. It is emphasized that the effects of central lesions can lead to widespread and extensive loss of biologically active substances in areas far distant from the lesion. Thus, consideration must be given to the possibility that physiological and behavioral changes associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders may arise from restricted pathology in groups of neurons quite distant from regions of brain showing primary functional disturbances." @default.
