- W2549904329 abstract "Avicennia marina) alon g the shoreline o~'~~le United Arab Emirates. The results for the hydrocil elnJcal parameters lIk e -~Iinity, pH, DO, BOD, and nutri ent salt s reveal ed hi ghe r va lues and more pronounced variations in th e mangr~)~e wate ;) co mpared to nearby creeks IIldlcatln g decre as mg trend . Among mangrove areas, Umma al-Quw run IS characterIzed by It'~ hi gher di ss olved oxygen, pH , phosphate, and lower BOD. ammonia and nitrate . The mangro ve water of Khor al-Khu walr was characteri zed by it s hi gher salinity BOD, ammonia , nitrite , nitrate , and sili cate and lower dissov led oxygen. pH. and pho sphate . Th e result s for petroleum hydrocarbons in man grove water indicated th e presence of hydrocarbons 111 all sa mples . However, the mean hydrocarbon s co ncentration in seawater (3.9 Il gII ) was almost simil ar to th e co nc entrations in th e coastal watcr of the Arabian Gulf. clearl y re vealin g th e absence of hi gh concentration s. Sedimcnt analYSIS for orgalll c carbon contents indi ca ted higher valu es in mangrove sed imen ts ( 1.1-2. 8 times) than th e ne arby creeks . Th e res ults showed th at all va lu es were below 10 Ilg/g of dry wei ght which co rrespond [0 hydrocarbons co ncen tr ations in coastal areas considered unpolI~ 0, 1 1- ( Tropical mangroves provide a series of benefits for coastal popUlations as a result of rich biodiversity and hi ghl y productive regions. In the United Arab Emirates, mangroves (A vicenni(( marina) cover an area of about 2930 ha . More than 80% of which are located in the North-East and South-West of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and about 5% on ly are present south of Khor Kalba on the East Coast of the United Arab Emirates '. Other mangroves are located in the vicinity of Ras al-Khaimah and Khor al-Khuwair in the North-East of the lagoon of Khor ai -Beida, the khor of Umm al-Quwain and Ajman. Most of these plants are relatively young «50 y old) ranging between 0.5 to 2 m in height, mangroves play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance in the marine and coastal ecosystems of the U.A.E. However, the coastal habitats in the U.A.E. are deteriorating rapidly due to urbanization , recreationa l development, and industrial installations which are now underway near many mangroves areas, representing a direct threat to these forests . In order to protect and conserve this fragile ecosystem, the present study aims to characterize some physical and chemjcal components of mangrove ecosystem as a means to monitor th e health of these important ecosystems." @default.
