- W2550551457 abstract "Comics historians often claim that US superheroes were singularly proactive in propagating for the nation’s entry into WWII, largely because so many superhero creators were Jewish. This chapter argues that such readings create a Jewish American community that was more activist, united, and informed than can be historically supported. Instead, it shows how Superman adhered to the official US line, initially championing isolationism and moving toward intervention only as the nation did. Particular attention is paid to a 1940 strip, in which Superman “ends the war,” and to the recent tendency of using a Nazi reaction to this strip to support claims about Superman’s Jewishness. The chapter also discusses Superman’s fight against fifth columnists, which again is neither singular to comics nor pro-war in its figuration." @default.
