- W2550734257 abstract "Constrained by the academic style of his painterly training in America, Robert Breer moved to Paris in the early 50‘s and fell in with the «hard edge» group around Denise Rene gallery. Yet rather than following in the «Op Art» painting of Vasarely for which the gallery would become famous, Breer went in his own direction. Returning to the long-abandoned «mutoscope» viewer from the prehistory of industrial cinema, Breer experimented with creating a new kind of abstract animation that could be experienced within the art gallery simultaneously as film and sculpture. While long forgotten to both film studies and art history, the mutoscope works he created from 1958-1964 were a crucial turning point in postwar art, realizing the novel concept of installing moving images within the brightly lit physical space of the art gallery rather than within the traditional darkened environment of the cinematic theater." @default.
