- W2550933222 abstract "Nanometer-sized metal particles or Metal NanoClusters (MNC) are objects of great interest in modern chemical research due to their unique electrical, magnetic and optical properties, which are distinct from both those of the bulk metal and those of isolated atoms and molecules. MNC can be so fragile and unstable that if their surfaces touch, they will fuse together, losing their special shape and properties. The development of Polymer-Stabilized MNC (PSMNC) is one of the most promising solutions to the MNC stability problem, and as such, they attract great attention of scientists and technologists [1]. In this presentation we report a novel route for the inter-matrix synthesis of PSMNC based upon the use of polymeric membranes as a nanoreactor. The proposed approach is based on the synthesis of sulfonated polymers with an optimal degree of sulfonation (ODS). ODS must provide, on one hand, both insolubility of the polymer in water and sufficient solubility of that in an appropriate organic solvent to produce the membrane casting solution. One the other hand it must also provide a sufficiently high ion-exchange capacity of the membrane obtained. This approach is illustrated by the results obtained by studying the intermatrix synthesis of mono-metallic Cu and Pt MNC of an average minimum diameter of 5-10 nm by using sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membranes. The synthesis procedure consisted of the membrane loading with metal ions followed by reduction of metals inside the polymeric matrix. It was shown that repetitive metal loading-reduction procedure of the same membrane permits to accumulate sufficiently high concentration of PSMNC inside the polymer matrix. Samples of SPEEK-PSMNC membranes were characterized by SEM and TEM techniques to evaluate the morphological changes of the membranes and to estimate the MNC size. The MNC loaded SPEEK membranes were dissolved in organic solvent to prepare a sort of PSMNC-based “inks”, which in turn were used to cast membranes on the surface of graphite-epoxy composite (GEC) electrodes [2], what permitted to study the electrochemical properties of SPEEK-PSMNC composites. Some of the results obtained are shown in Figures 1-3. c b a" @default.
