- W2551202755 abstract "Communication Design at the Otago Polytechnic School of Design, is a relatively new programme, celebrating its first graduates in 2008. Hand in hand with the development of the new degree programme, was the development of the Otago Institute of Design. Initially conceived in collaboration with the University of Otago, the OiD engages in a range of research, development and commercial design-led initiatives for businesses and the public sector, boasting a wide range of facilities, capabilities and projects. The projects that I describe in this paper have evolved out of interaction design teams, incorporating the skills and ideas of both staff and students at Otago Polytechnic. The OiD acted as a broker for the Design School, enabling concepts initially developed in classroom studio scenarios to be further developed and delivered to clients. This extends the learning outcomes for students as well as fulfilling the Otago Polytechnic’s applied research aims of connecting staff and student research with the industry and professions. This paper briefly outlines two projects, developed over 2010-11, with communication design staff and students, in Dunedin, New Zealand. The works engage publics with a range of social history subjects, in different ways. One project has been realised, and the second is in development. In section one of this paper, the design briefs will be outlined, and the concept solutions briefly described. Section 2 will reflect on this evolving practice of the design of social history storytelling projects in public spaces. I will consider the projects in light of contemporary storytelling, and the grafting of tools and techniques from other media, such as theatre and filmmaking. The designs include characters, objects and images that have material and contextual connections to their sites. Implicit in their stories are embodied audiences. Discussion will draw also on contemporary museological ideas of community-based identity building. In Section 3 Nina Simon’s definitions of social and relational objects (Simon, 2010) are compared with Shedroff et al’s model of Experience Design (Diller, Shedroff and Rhea, 2005). I will consider how an off-screen socio-technological approach to telling historical narratives in public spaces, may breathe new life into both histories and audiences traditionally associated with museum display and social history theatre and film.
