- W2551602986 abstract "Background: Day surgery is well established in the western parts of the world and manypatients pass the surgery unit each day. According to the Patient Act the patient should amongother things, be informed about the methods available for examination and treatment, theexpected care process, and how risks and complications can be avoided. The patients receievea lot of information within a short period of time and might experience difficultiescomprehending the information. Previous studies have shown that patients are satisfied withthe perioperative care that has been given, but that there are shortcomings with the providedinformation.Objective: The aim of this study is that from a patient perspective evaluate the perioperativeinformation in connection with receiving a brachial plexus block in ambulatory surgery.Method: This is a quauntitative, cross-sectional survey with a questionnaire as data collectionmethod. The patients had undergone orthopedic day surgery of the upper extremity.Results: The response rate was 65 %, of witch slightly more were men than women, and amajority aged 40-65 years. The results presented based on the survey question areas; thetimeing of information, the content of information, participation in the choice of analgesia,satisfaction with information and the respondents' proposals for improvement. The patientswanted to receive both oral and written preoperative information regarding the obtaining of abrachial plexus block, before the day of surgery. The patients´ lacked information about theeffect and potential risks of the block and being involved in the choice of the particular formof anesthesia.Conclusion: The day surgery patients demands knowledge and information to manage theircare at home, they value both oral and written information. A large proportion of patientsresponded that they could not comprehend the provided information, which suggests that theindividualized information needs to be improved. Nevertheless the patients were generallysatisfied with the information they received in connection with the brachial plexus block." @default.
