- W2552007697 abstract "The current flow through a test cell containing dielectric fluid has been investigated by steadily increasing and decreasing the applied voltage in recurring cycles from ground potential to levels well within the high field regime at a rate of one every 10 s [1]. After separating the displacement current from the charge transport component the latter was plotted logarithmically showing a sharply defined linear portion in the upper high field regime, the reciprocal slope s−1 u of which increased linearly with gap separation. Upon application of a crossed magnetic field to the cell the functional form of the variation of s−1 u with gap separation assumed a graphical form which lay concave to the abscissa. This particular testing technique of ramp voltage application was introduced initially by Seeker and Hilton for the purpose of measuring the breakdown voltage and they also investigated the influence of a crossed magnetic field [2]. The breakdown voltage of spherical brass electrodes was observed to increase by up to 4% with increasing flux density and then declined to below the usual breakdown value at 0.02 T for gap separations of 100 and 150 µm in purified and filtered hexane. By contrast the current response data of Watson and Girgis was obtained with copper electrodes in dimethyl siloxane in the gap range 0.6–1.4 cm. but breakdown data was not collected because of the tedious necessity of cleaning out the system after each rupture. In subsequent work, it was recognized that the threshold current and voltage above which the log-arithmic characteristic was linear was indeed a characteristic of the system which varies with ramp rate and impurity level of the oil [3]. This work has therefore been directed towards an investigation of the variation of the manner in which the threshold point varies with the crossed magnetic flux density. In addition variation of s−1 u with magnetic flux density has been further examined with gap separation over a range of magnetic flux densities and electrode materials." @default.
