- W2552878668 abstract "child's social development. As Bijou and Baer (1967) have pointed out, most educators agree that at least one major function of a pre school setting is to foster the social behaviors of children toward more pleasant and productive living in our culture. Appropriately, then, there has been research analyzing the effects of the preschool environment on the isolate child's low rate of social interaction. Allen, Hart, Buell, Harris, and Wolf (1967); Harris, Wolf, and Baer (1967); Foxwell (1966); Reynolds and Risley (1969); Kirby and Toler (1970), and Whitman, Mercurio, and Caponigri (1970) have increased normal and retarded children's peer interaction using social and/or material reinforcers. Another group of studies introduced an additional variable which increased child social behavior by using a combination of social rein forcement and response priming procedures. The prime was defined as a verbal and/or nonverbal teacher behavior directed toward a child who was not socially interacting with another child (or chil dren) in a verbal and/or nonverbal manner, and included a sugges tion, instruction, and/or physical directive (i.e., Billy, will you col lect tickets for the show?) that would bring the child into social contact with other children if the child complied. Coats (1967); Ingram (1967); Buell, Stoddard, Harris, and Baer (1968); Wheeler (1970); Zook (1970); and Miller, Holmberg, and LeBlanc (1971) reported that the priming-reinforcement duo was effective in increas ing a child's social play. Usually, the social reinforcement and the priming procedures mentioned above were delivered in an obvious, direct manner to the child under study as noted in the priming example above. However, Allen et al. (1964) stated that on occasion a brief use of the direct reinforcement procedure seemed to terminate the peer interaction," @default.
