- W2553431574 abstract "Perceived stress is well known to be associated with physical health and psychological health, 1 Thoits P.A. Stress and health: major findings and policy implications. J Health Soc Behav. 2010; 51: S41-S53 Crossref PubMed Scopus (1116) Google Scholar but less studied is the association between stress and mental abilities like global cognitive functioning. Although popular culture has latched onto the idea of stress affecting memory, the emphasis has been on acute stress and short-term memory. More recently, researchers have begun to delve into the idea of stress resulting from chronic exposures (e.g., through social status, neighborhood safety, financial problems) and the association with cognitive decline in older people. For example, a recent study found an increase in incident amnestic mild cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults who had high perceived stress. 2 Katz M.J. Derby C.A. Wang C. et al. Influence of perceived stress on incident amnestic mild cognitive impairment: results from the Einstein Aging Study. Alzheim Dis Assoc Disord. 2016; 30: 93-98 Crossref PubMed Scopus (40) Google Scholar Although research in this area is still relatively sparse, the study by Turner et al. 3 Turner A.D. James B.D. Capuanao A.W. et al. Perceived stress and cognitive decline in different cognitive domains in a cohort of older African Americans. Am J Geriatr Psychiatry. 2016; Google Scholar in this issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry contributes to this body of knowledge with important findings for older African American adults. The key finding of Turner et al.—that among older African American adults higher perceived stress is associated with faster cognitive decline in global cognition, episodic memory, and visuospatial ability—underscores the deleterious effect of perceived stress on older adults, particularly among a population known to have a high burden of stress and cognitive decline, African Americans. Older African Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer disease or cognitive impairment than whites, 4 Lines L.M. Wiener J.M. Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Alzheimer's Disease: A Literature Review, Office of Disability, Aging and Long-Term Care Policy. Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. Perceived Stress and Cognitive Decline in Different Cognitive Domains in a Cohort of Older African AmericansThe American Journal of Geriatric PsychiatryVol. 25Issue 1PreviewResearch indicates that stress is linked to cognitive dysfunction. However, few community-based studies have explored the relationship between perceived stress and cognitive decline, and fewer still have utilized cognitive domains rather than a global measure of cognition.
