- W255350096 abstract "Contraction of airways smooth muscle can be provoked by a variety of agents (termed spasmogens) which exert their effect by interaction with cell-surface receptors. Such agents may be released endogenously from neurones, may be blood-borne, or may be released by pro-inflammatory cells which infiltrate the airways under certain circumstances [1, 2]. Hyperreactive states of the airways are characterized by an increased smooth muscle tone and airways resistance which are due, at least in part, to changes in the response of airways smooth muscle to endogenously generated stimuli [2, 3]. Consequently, considerable research effort has been centred on elucidating the mechanisms underlying agonist-induced contraction and establishing pharmacological manipulations which counter or reverse the actions of contractile stimuli." @default.
