- W2553526508 abstract "Photonic Crystals (PCs) with flnite size can support surface states when termi- nated by defect scatterers. These surface states resemble in a large degree the surface plasmon polariton modes (SPP) of metallic surfaces, and can have strong in∞uence on the lensing prop- erties of the PCs and on PC-induced beaming efiects. Their advantages over conventional SPP modes are mainly that they can be observed in any frequency regime, from the microwaves to the optical - by adjusting the length-scale of the PC-, their dispersion properties can be easily engineered|modifying the defect termination-, and they do not require metallic components which imply increased losses. In this work we investigate in detail, using a flnite-difierence frequency-domain (FDFD) tech- niqueand a plane wave expansion method, the dispersion properties of surface states in two- dimensional dielectric PCs for difierent defect types at the PC interface (1,2); moreover we examine the ways to excite these surface states, as well as the role of the PC surface states in the achievement of enhanced transmission and beaming through photonic crystal waveguides of subwavelength width. We focus mainly on a novel surface defect based on a periodic arrangement of dimer rods (2), like the one shown in Fig. 1. We show how this type of defect induces surface modes with dispersion that can be ∞exibly manipulated, by modifying, e.g., the distance between the dimmer defect and the periodic PC, the separation between the two rods composing the dimer or the orientation of the dimer axis in respect to the PC interface. For this type of dimmer defect we observe the formation of single or multiple surface band(s) with not only positive but also negative slope, which implies possibility for backwards propagation of the surface waves; this backwards surface wave propagation is demonstrated through a numerical flnite-difierence time-domain (FDTD) experiment, which can be easily realized at microwave, mid-or near infrared frequencies, enabling thus the experimental demonstration of backwards" @default.
