I would like first of all to show that we misunderstand the operations of what we call chance‘ if we reify it, separating it from the sphere of the determined. This makes the aims either of leaving nothing to chance or of yielding oneself up to it, especially if this is with the aim of loosening‘ or liberating‘, equally implausible. Secondly, I want to show the consequences that a reformed view of chance may have for our understanding of history and our relations to it. I will propose in particular that past and present are always intertwined probabilistically, such that what happened‘ will always be able to be put into play in new, and not entirely predictable interpretative contexts. There will always be facticity, since the practice of history would be meaningless without it, but that facticity will be cryptic or abstract until the force of the facticity is activated within particular fields of probability. Finally, I will warn that, although the prospect of a more probabilistic climate in the arts and humanities may suggest new forms of judgement and sense-making, it is important not to overestimate the chances of this, since, persistent rumours to the contrary, knowing what it is you are doing does not always conduce to doing it more successfully." @default.
