• W2554966394 abstract "To study the nitrate contamination of groundwater in central alluvial plain agro-eco-sub region of Punjab, 275 groundwater samples were collected from the tube wells and hand pumps in such a way that whole of the sub region was covered. There were wide variations in different chemical constituents of water samples collected from this sub region of Punjab. Electrical conductance (EC) which is an index of total soluble salts varied from 325-4652 μmhos/cm having mean value 890μmhos/cm .There are 96 , 3 and 1 percent samples having EC 4000 μmhos/cm. NO3-N ranges from nil to 6.99 mg L with mean value 2.04 mg L There are 70.9 per cent waters fit for irrigation purposes on the basis of EC & RSC while 19.6 per cent waters are marginal. Further 9.6 percent water samples are unfit for irrigation. Highest range of NO3-N varying from nil to 6.99 mg L was found in Ludhiana district with mean a value of 1.93 mg L. The lowest range of nil to 1.51 was found in Kapurthala district with a mean value of 0.48. NO3-N was not detected in 34.5 percent water samples of this region. Further 19.2, 26.5 and 13.4 percent of water samples contained NO3-N 5 mg L. Thus the highest mean value of NO3-N was found in tube wells nearing dairy farm followed by Orchards, Inhabitant area, Vegetables and wheat. Lowest mean NO3-N was observed in those tube wells where fodder is grown. There exists a significant ‘–ve’ relationship of NO3-N with RSC (r=-0.118*) and depth of tube well water(r=-0.218*) Significant positive relationship with bicarbonates (r=0.170*) and EC (r=0.129*).Ten soil profile samples were collected upto a depth of 120 cm. At 120 cm depth maximum NO3-N was observed in case of vegetables followed by Intensive cropping, rice wheat, cottonwheat and paddyraya crop rotations. None of the soil parameter showed any relationship with NO3-N of irrigation water. A map has been prepared showing NO3-N concentration of this sub region." @default.
