- W2555061128 abstract "This issue, the final of our 50th volume, began with an idea put forward by Jen Cleland and came to fruition thanks to her leadership, along with that of Trudie Roberts.1 The call for papers indicated a ‘desire to discount the claims that academics are “serious people with no social lives”’. In hindsight, the fact that so many people were eager to write ‘unleashed’ versions of academic articles might reinforce rather than discount such claims. More troubling to me, personally, however, is that the effort to treat these submissions with the seriousness that they deserve has raised awareness of the lack of social lives within the editorial team. Every year we get bombarded with hundreds of papers that express thousands of creative ideas and we have, quite frankly, seen enough. It takes an extraordinary amount of time from reviewers around the globe to read and think carefully about the submissions we receive, so we are constantly looking for ways to cut corners. Historically, we have done that by basing decisions on word count and font style rather than reading the papers that fill our inboxes. The globalisation of technology, however, has made those features less discriminating even as the number of submissions increases. To overcome this problem new policy is required. To be clear, implementation of new policy is not purely a selfish pursuit. We are concerned first and foremost with our readership and recognise that any mental workload they must dedicate to reading novel and imaginative articles takes away from their capacity to spend time on the golf course, to enjoy an afternoon with family, or to turn their office fountain into a water slide. We need articles that are more predictable and less thoughtful to avoid inspiring our readers and distracting them from their daily routine. To that end, I intend to propose to our International Editorial Board that every article we receive must be completed using the same template, illustrated in the abstract that follows (Figure 1). We will expect all authors to simply replace the bracketed words and then use each sentence as the basis for an elaborated paragraph or two that will become the body of the paper. Paraphrasing will be done at your co-authors’ peril as we intend to reverse the focus of our plagiarism detection software to identify (and rule ineligible) any deviation from this content and structure. Such strict and absolute limitations might seem severe, but they are necessary to finally achieve standardisation of practice, to improve the objectivity with which each decision is made, and to ensure that fairness becomes our ultimate priority. For those of you who foolishly enjoy the intellectual challenge of problem solving and the creativity required to write articles that tell an appropriate and compelling story about your data, I am sorry to remove those pleasurable aspects of your lives. I hope, however, that with time you will come to appreciate that the good we can achieve collectively by saving editors’ time and energy outweighs the harm done to the masochists who enjoy writing without tethers. When giving advice to potential authors I would commonly wish them luck for a smooth and constructive peer review. Readers who choose to use this template, however, will not need luck, so I will simply say ‘you're welcome’. In fact, I am so confident in this template's value that I offer this promise: if you build your article using this new format and submit it to Medical Education you will receive a publication decision within days.2 Consider that a money-back guarantee. While we take this opportunity to celebrate the conclusion of Medical Education's 50th volume with a little humour (and desperately hope that no one will take us up on the offer of using the above template), it is worth turning serious for a moment. In my January editorial, I noted that we would spend the year highlighting many of the seminal pieces published throughout our history that served as ‘stepping-stones that have determined where we stand today’.3 Having now celebrated those 50 volumes, we also want to maximise your opportunity to add your own stones to the path on which others will tread during the next 50 years. Increasing amounts of guidance in that regard are offered on our website (click ‘write’ at www.mededuc.com).4 It is in that light that I would encourage you to read the articles included in this issue. Although there is a risk with any spoof or satire that it is simply laughed at and then ignored,5 I would urge everyone to use the farcical examination of health professional education that is offered by this month's articles to seek the deeper insight that is being conveyed. A talented guest editorial group made particularly committed contributions to the creation of this issue: Jennifer Cleland, Trudie Roberts, Lesley Pugsley, Fedde Scheele, Lara Varpio, Kim Walker and Paul Worley. In doing so, they made a concerted effort to curate articles that follow the Ig Nobel Prize dictum of selecting pieces that might make you laugh, but should make you think. I am grateful to them for their efforts and look forward to your contributions to the next 50 volumes." @default.
