- W2555103434 abstract "Wagner: The Potted Ring. Frida Leider, Friedrich Schorr, Gota Ljungberg, Walter Widdop, Florence Austral, Florence Easton, Lauritz Melchior, Maria Olszewska, Ivar Andresen, et al., soloists; Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin State Opera Orchestra, Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conducted by Albert Coates, Leo Blech, Robert Heger, Karl Alwin, Fritz Zweig, John Barbirolli, Karl Muck and Lawrance Collingwood. Pristine Classical PACO 107 (2 CDs), PACO 114 (2 CDs), PACO 118 (3 CDs). www.pristineclassical. com (A complete contents listing is available on its website). Between 1926 and 1932 HMV recorded extensive excerpts from Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen in a rather piecemeal fashion, using a variety of singers and conductors. Despite changes in casting, conductors, and orchestras--often from one side to the next--the recordings captured some of the most important Wagner singers of the twentieth century. The most significant of these collections features the incomparable Lauritz Melchior in nearly all of the title role of Siegfried. Frida Leider and Friedrich Schorr, arguably the greatest Brunnhilde and Wotan of the 1920s and early 1930s, were recorded while still at the peak of their vocal and interpretive powers. Other highlights include Walter Widdop as Siegmund in Die Walkure and portions of Siegfried in Gotterdammerung, along with Florence Austral as Brunnhilde in portions of the Walkure and Gotterdammerung excerpts. Both singers demonstrate that Wagner can be sung with less than superhuman vocal resources, given proper vocal training. Most of the proceedings are incisively conducted by Albert Coates and Leo Blech, augmented with impressive contributions from Robert Heger. In 1994 Pearl issued a seven-CD collection of this material in fine transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn. Pristine Classical, a label based in France that sells its product primarily as downloads, has now reissued this entire series of recordings, in new Obert-Thorn transfers. Andrew Rose, company proprietor and the engineer behind most of Pristine's remasterings, normally offers his releases in three levels of resolution: 24 bit FLAC files, 16 bit FLAC files, and 320 kbps MP3 files. Pristine has traditionally offered monaural material in its original form as well as in remasterings. I normally abhor fake-stereo treatment of monaural recordings, but the process used by Rose is radically different from previous artificial stereo practices, as is explained in detail on Pristine's website. I have found Pristine's Ambient Stereo treatment to be very tasteful and compatible with a sum to mono if a true mono playback is desired. Obert-Thorn has been preparing transfers for Pristine since 2008 and although some of the material he transferred from LPs early on was offered in ambient stereo, he prefers true mono for 78 rpm sources. All of his more recent transfers for Pristine, including The Potted Ring, are available only in genuine mono, as 44.1 kHz, 16 bit FLAC files. I reviewed the Pearl edition of The Potted Ring in the Spring 1995 issue of the ARSC Journal (1995;26[1]:103-112). In that review I gave an overview of the various attempts to record music from the Ring operas on 78 rpm records and discussed in some detail the contents of various albums in which these extended excerpts from the early days of electrical recording were issued. I also offered a critique of the performances included in the Pearl edition. Given the state of contemporary Wagner singing, my enthusiasm for these performances has, if anything, increased over the intervening years. I am not going to repeat those details here--that review can be downloaded on the ARSC website (http://www.arsc-audio.org/journals/v26/v26n1p103-112.pdf), and it is recommended as a preface to the commentary offered here. With one newly added exception, the contents of the Pristine edition of The Potted Ring is identical to that of the Pearl set. …" @default.
