- W2555442908 abstract "Dermatology as a ‘small’ discipline – although this is not true: we take care of the largest organ of the body and 1 of 5 patients seeking primary care do so because of skin problem! – Dermatology has constantly to be aware of possible threats from the outside endangering the future of our specialty. While this means to take action in the concert of national and international health politics on one hand, the most important aspect is very simple: we – the dermatologists – have to be the best in taking care of the skin of our people! Therefore, we have to attract the best and the brightest of young doctors and teach them in the best possible way in basic knowledge, practical skills and general competencies. To attract the best and the brightest, we have to start in medical school and try to improve the place of Dermatology within the medical curriculum but also the methods of teaching. Unfortunately, in some countries, the value of teaching in University Departments is not so well recognized as compared to research. Both, however, have to go hand in hand – following Humboldt's ideal – in order to achieve the best education. In our Academy, the introduction of the ‘Junior’ membership status was a step into the right direction, with which we can motivate young doctors to become engaged in Dermatology. The education has to start at the level of medical students and to continue at the various stages of residents’ training up to postgraduate education for dermatology specialists. While a lot is done in improving the teaching of medical students, there is still – in many countries – a ‘black box’ with regard to standardized improvement of teaching quality at the resident level. Therefore, it is good to see that people start to think scientifically about this problem and evaluate the ‘climate’ of education for dermatology residents in various Universities (see next issue). Of course the content of teaching is crucial and should include the state-of-the-art knowledge in any aspect of our specialty. This has to be done not only at the level of natural sciences and medicine but should include understanding of philosophical and ethical questions and also economic and management aspects. Our young colleagues should also get training in managerial aspects and leadership. They will have to carry the flag in 10 to 20 years from now! Also exchange programmes for young people are of great help and should get more support. The best example is the Dermatology Foundation in the USA which has nothing comparable in Europe despite of the great efforts of the European Skin Research Foundation (ESRF) or the René Touraine Foundation. Under President Erwin Tschachler, an ‘EADV research fellowship’ was created with the concept of our President-elect C. Paul and A. Stratigos which will allow young colleagues to work in other places in Europe. It is worth mentioning that in the so-called dark middle-ages, it was normal that young people including University students were wandering throughout Europe from Bologna to Oxford and via Salamanca to Coimbra, in a time where travelling was much more cumbersome than today. We really lost some of our good traditions. Seeing other places not only helps in gaining knowledge but also will broaden the horizon of the young people. Apart from the levels of target groups and the content of teaching, it is the modalities, the ways in which the information is brought to the recipient which is crucial. Of course personal teaching by lectures in the classical way has its place in medical congresses or symposia. More and more, however, smaller groups for seminars and interactive teaching are coming. Web-based and online learning modalities together with teledermatology are on the move. A major important tool are journals bringing the new information from research and from experienced colleagues to the practising doctors. The Journal of the European Academy of the Dermatology and Venereology (JEADV) plays a central role ranking among the top ten in the concert of Dermatology journals worldwide. The major target group of our journal are the practising dermatologists in the office or in the hospital and the residents in training. The journal should also be attractive for researchers in our field. With this in mind, we try to offer a well-balanced mixture of basic mechanistic studies and actual practical clinical progress including the state of the art in management of certain skin diseases as put down in the European guidelines. At the end of the year, I want to thank all people who have worked very hard in the last year to produce this journal, first of all the authors, then the multitude of reviewers – in this issue, we only mention personally those who have done more than three reviews in 2016 – and the whole editorial group with the editorial board, the associate editors Lidia Rudnicka and Franco Rongioletti and the essential EADV editorial team with Maryse Clappier, Asao Sarukawa Aroldi and Laurence Zulianello, and Rupert Cousens representing our publisher. At the turn of the year take some time to ‘surf’ in a relaxed mood in paper or online versions trough our journal. Best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year 2017!" @default.
