- W255547309 abstract "To solve many types of problems, the subject has to advance and test a sequence of hypotheses where a hypothesis at one stage of the sequence depends on what hypothesis was selected at the immediately preceding stage. When a sequence of hypotheses does not lead to a solution, the subject may give up the sequence and try an entirely new sequence (the sequence-unit model), he may give up only the last hypothesis in the sequence and revise backward until he comes up with a correct sequence (the backward-revision model), or he may 'squeeze' the initial steps and revise backward or squeeze the last steps and revise forward (in either case, the step-squeezing model). The results of three experiments support the step-squeezing model. Most theories of hypothesis-testing behavior (e.g., Restle, 1962) are concerned with problems that can be solved by single-stage hypothesis testing. Lashley (1928) thought that a subject tries one cue or hypothesis after another in a learning experiment. When one hypothesis does not work, the subject discards it and adopts another. However, as Newell and Simon (1972) showed, many types of problems can be solved only by advancing a sequence of hypotheses and testing them in sequence; that is, the testing of a particular hypothesis depends on what hypothesis was selected in the immediately preceding stage. For instance, in a multipleunit T maze the correctness of a right or left turn at any stage depends on the correct turn of the immediately preceding stage. The present study is concerned mainly with the following questions about sequential hypothesis testing. In solving a problem, how does the subject single out an intermediate hypothesis? When a sequence of hypotheses does not lead to a solution, how does he revise them? Does he give up the entire sequence? Or does he give up only some and retain the rest, and then revise in some systematic way?" @default.
