- W2555839405 abstract "Background and objectives: Diabetes is associated with cardiac and extracardiac microvasculature abnormalities. As microvasculature integrity is a pre-requisite for myocardial viability, diabetic patients may have less contractile reserve after myocardial infarction than non diabetics. To test this hypothesis, we studied 108 patients after infarction referred for dobutamine echocardiography. Patients and methods: We studied 108 patients with dobutamine echocardiography after myocardial infarction, starting at 5 µg/kg/min and then the dose was increased every 3 min up to 20-40 µg/kg/min. Out of the 108 patients, 28 (25.9%) were diabetics and 80 (74.1%) non diabetics The result of dobutamine echocardiography was compared between both groups of patients. Results: Left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline was similar in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Patients with diabetes mellitus presented contractile reserve less frequently (14.3% vs. 36.3%, p = 0.023). Wall motion score index increased in 0.04 ± 0.13 in diabetics and decreased in 0.05 ± 0.20 in non diabetics (p = 0.078). Conclusion: Although having similar left ventricular systolic function at rest after myocardial infraction, diabetics have myocardial viability less frequently than non diabetics." @default.
