- W2556552981 abstract "A concordancer is a tool for text analysis, which can generate lists of all the occurrences of the key word in context (KWIC) in an electrouic text or text collection (corpus). Concordancing lists from corpus therefore present words in authentic context, which may be useful for learners to learn vocabulary.Convictions are strong among language professionals that contexmalized vocabulary learning is more effective than learning words in isolation (McCarthy, 1990).Even though the relative value of concordancers in assisting vocabulary learning has been investigated and synonym learning by using concordancers has been proved possible, fewer experiments have been done on the effectiveness of concordancers in contrast to using traditional dictionaries of synonyms. The present study hypothesizes that: ①Concordancers will have a better effect on students' synonym learning than using traditional dictionaries of synonyms. ② Participants will perform differently according to the difficulty types of synonyms. They will find those English synonyms with different transhtion in their L1 (Chinese) easier to learn than those with the same translation in their L1. In this study, 200 second-year non-English-major-undersraduates participated in a test of 30 pairs of synonyms with either the same or different transhtion of their L1. The target words were chosen from the wordlists for CET test. 60 participants and 6 pairs of synonyms were chosen. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, one of which used a dictionary as the aid of learning the 6 pairs of synonyms, while the other used web-based concordancing tools. A posttest was given on the 6 pairs of synonyms. The result showed that the hypothesis that concordancers are more effective in helping the subjects distinguish synonyms was not supported (sig. = 0. 830 > 0.05). The hypothesis that the synonyms with the same L1 transhtion are more difficult for the subjects to distinguish is supported (sig. =0. 001 <0.05)." @default.
