- W2557376095 abstract "In the last decade, the waste management and treatment paradigm has shifted toward resource recovery for water, energy, and nutrients, among other valuable chemicals. In this chapter, we discuss the importance of nutrient loads in agricultural waste from various perspectives, including ecological protection, human health and well being, and economic, political, and food security. This chapter comprehensively examines the aqueous chemistry of animal manures through chemical equilibrium modeling to determine optimal conditions for nutrient release and recovery. Here, we have focused on poultry, swine, and dairy cow manure. While several different solids can be effectively precipitated, struvite (poultry, swine) and hydroxyapatite (dairy cow) were the dominant products. These findings indicate that over 95% recovery of nutrients is possible through pH manipulation and solid/liquid separation processes. Given the impact of agriculturally derived nutrients on water resources, we posit that nutrient recovery technologies cannot only alleviate that stress, but also provide alternative sources of valuable agrochemicals." @default.
