Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed to characterize the structure, morphology and phase evolution of the as-synthesized whiskers. The results demonstrated that the alumina whiskers were successfully obtained at the temperature as low as 560 °C. The whiskers grew on both ends of fusiform alumina base grains, which were formed before the nucleation. The diffraction peaks in XRD pattern of the synthesized whiskers were indexed to an unknown transition alumina phase. The transition alumina whiskers transformed into γ-phase at 900 °C, then completely into α-phase at 1200 °C without obvious morphology change." @default.
