- W255803820 abstract "Executive Summary This article presents a model for alternative doctoral programs in business administration in response to the burgeoning demand for full-time business educators. Administrators seek faculty training in both instructional methodology and scholarly research. At the same time a number of senior management/practitioners teach classes as adjuncts to the regular faculty. Some of these adjunct faculty members are highly regarded classroom instructors who have expressed interests in becoming fulltime academicians. While they have completed the learning curve in the area of instruction, they require training in scholarly research to meet the requirements for fulltime faculty status. Unfortunately, these career-change individuals are unable to pursue Ph.D. studies in traditional formats due to time and residency policies required of such programs. Hence, a prototype is presented as an example of a distance learning delivery system, which may be utilized as one alternative instructional methodology for such a program. Business schools have been in a continuous state of expansion and development to meet the increasing demand from industry for trained graduates, particularly those with the MBA degree. In order to keep pace with this increase in demand for trained business professionals, business schools continue to increase their enrollment levels in both graduate and undergraduate programs. However, one study suggests that business and related program enrollments at the doctoral level have increased by a mere 3.5% over the past decade, which is producing an insufficient supply of terminally degreed faculty members (Merritt, 2001). Regional accrediting agencies recognize both the Ph.D. and the DBA as terminal credentials for faculty members within business schools (Anonymous, 1999). This supply/demand scenario is creating challenges for business program administrators seeking to recruit adequate numbers of fully qualified educators and researchers. Student demand for advanced degrees has been the rise for nearly two decades despite intermittent periods of decline (Vatter, 1999). Of special note for administrators seeking individuals to assume faculty positions, the proportion of university-level students in the 35-andover age category has grown from 8.6% in 1972 to just over 18% in 1998 (Vatter, 1999). Given this scenario, it seems logical that administrators would have an interest in recruiting current adult adjunct faculty members into full-time positions to effectively meet this enrollment growth. While the traditional focus full-time faculty selection has been in favor of those graduates from traditional doctoral programs, many institutions employ a cadre of industry professionals who serve as adjunct instructors. Adjunct faculty members are practicing industry professionals who have been reported to provide current real world examples in the classroom. One study suggests that this hands on instructional method often receives positive evaluations from administrators and business students (Ford and Lebruto, 1995). Many senior business practitioners consider career changes to full-time academe as a result of their involvement in adjunct instruction (Tesone and Alexakis, 2001). This article presents a model for alternative doctoral programs in business administration in response to the burgeoning demand for full-time business administration educators. Administrators seek faculty trained in both instructional methodology and scholarly research. Some adjunct faculty members, while productive business professionals with a proclivity toward education, do not usually possess the necessary skills for scholarly research and publication garnered in a traditional doctoral program. In certain cases, these mature business practitioners seek the career change to academia; however, their day-to-day schedules, family commitments, intense industry involvement and a host of other responsibilities prohibit attendance in traditional doctoral programs. …" @default.
