- W2558172636 abstract "The prediction of migration or retention of radionuclides in geomedia is one of the major problems associated with radioactive waste disposal. Use of Eh-pH diagrams based on sound thermo dynamic data has proven useful for both the Oklo Natural Reactor and for sedimentary uranium deposits. Appropriate diagrams for temperatures in the range from 25° to 200 0 celsius allow predictions to be made which are entirely consistent with available measurements. For geomedia where organics are present and for brines, experimental data must be employed to supplement any predic t ions made on a pure ly inorganic thermodynamic data base. Eh - pH DIAGRAMS The use of Eh-pH diagrams in geochemistry has been widespread (1, 2, 3), for low temperature and pressure conditions for solid and aqueous phases stable in the water stability field. Conventionally, these diagrams have been used for systems where the elements involved exhibit more than one oxidation state. Yet even when no oxidation-reduction is involved, pH limits for solids within the water stability field are of interest, especially when carbonates or sulfates are considered in addition to oxides (or hydroxides). Thus in cases where no extensive solid solution exists between various elements in solid phases, super imposition of diagrams can be extremely useful in recognizing stable from metastable mineral assemblages." @default.
