- W255900866 abstract "Songs in Group Psychotherapy for Chemical Dependence by Alan D. Reitman. Barcelona Publishers, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-937440-07-7As a music therapist it can be exhilarating to be active in researching and creating new programs, but sometimes this can lead to pulling one's hair out and wondering if your ideas and programs are on track and meeting clients' needs. What a pleasure it is, then, to find manuals in which other skilled therapists havedocumentedandsharedtheirresearchandideasfortreatment programs that have proven effective with specific client populations. Such a manual is this one written by Alan Reitman, which addresses the issues of chemical dependence within the context of group music psychotherapy.Reitman's rationale for using music therapy treatment is well-grounded in his knowledge of this client population and issues of chemical dependence. In reference to Gorski's four stages of recovery, which he outlines on page 6 of this book, the program Reitman describes would be best suited for group members who have broken through their denial and see a rationale for their treatment (stage 1] and who have subsequently gone through a withdrawal period (stage 2). Reitman's program consists of fourteen sessions that address issues of challenging addictive thinking (stage 3] and lifestyle repair (stage 4).In addition to writing a how-to manual with clearly defined programs, Reitman provides interesting and engaging introductions to each protocol. These introductions help the reader understand the experiences of the recovering addict. This is of benefit to those who have not been on the recovery journey themselves, and it certainly helps provide insight and rationale for those who wish to implement this as a new program in an established addictions treatment center. Each protocol follows a clear outline that presents song materials, the purpose of the protocol, objectives, a materials list, and a step-by-step procedure. Common to all ofthe protocols is the identification of a personal goal by each group member in relation to the session's topic, which is followed by a song-listening activity that serves to introduce the topic. Reitman illustrates how music listening and lyric analysis can provide a safe place to address various forms of problematic thinking patterns (stinking thinking]. Rather than confronting clients directly with their thinking errors, the author uses a song. His rationale is as follows:Listening to a story that is so easily identified with bypasses the need for a defensive stance. This, in turn, opens the door for increased trust, relating, and sharing even in the face of being challenged at another level of depth, (p. …" @default.
