- W2559322970 abstract "Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions generate acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere and in the ionospheric plasma [1-9], an effect that can be exploited [4-6, 10] for the detection of earthquake epicenters, locating the origins of volcanic eruptions, and assessing the power of these processes. The generation of acoustic --gravity waves in the atmosphere under the action of a Rayleigh surface wave has been investigated [7] in the case where a disturbance of the earth's surface is specified in the form of a sinusoidal profile moving with a constant velocity. In the first section of the present paper, we estimate the disturbance of the electron density of the ionospheric plasma due to an earthquake (treating it as a Rayleigh wave localized in the direction of motion}. Unlike [7], we consider losses due to the slight electrical conductivity of the medium (approximation of small magnetic Reynolds numbers). The conductivity is considered to depend on the height, and the height inhomogeneity of the undisturbed charged-particle density of the ionospheric plasma is taken into account. The second section is concerned with the action of volcanic eruption on the ionosphere. The eruption process is described as nonsteady-state release of mass, momentum, and energy from an external source and as harmonic vibrations of the earth's surface localized about that source. w Let us consider disturbances induced in the neutral component of the ionospheric plasma by a Ray[eigh surface wave. We use the following model of the earth's surface and the medium above it. We take the boundary z = 0 as the undisturbed surface of the earth.
